So you want to attend a genealogy conference…

Good morning everyone! I originally was going to blog about registering and planning your schedule for the upcoming SCGS Jamboree, but the good folks at the Jamboree blog had beat me to it. I have read their 3-part posts on how to make your planning, and time at a genealogy conference more efficient, and I highly suggest that anyone attending ANY upcoming genealogy educational event, should read them.

SCGS Jamboree – Early Bird Registration ends on April 30th

Just wanted to post a reminder that early bird registration ends on April 30, 2014. Don’t be left out and have to pay full price to go. This is a great genealogical event where you have the opportunity to learn a lot of new tools, resources and be inspired. So don’t miss out!

Southern California Genealogy Jamboree

I have been attending this conference for the past four years and with my daughter for the last two. We both enjoy the education we receive and the new friends we meet. I highly recommend this conference if you are in the area. My daughter and I will be attending again this year and I hope that if you attend, you stop us and say Hi. Here is the information and details they had on their blog:

“The Southern California Genealogical Society proudly announces the 45th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree. The popular conference will be held at our usual venue, the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank, CA, from Friday through Sunday, June 6 to 8, 2014. Online registration is open on the Jamboree website, and the Marriott’s website is ready to take your reservation.

Jamboree combines 55 speakers, over 60 exhibitors, 134 class sessions for a variety of experience levels, and special events to create an exceptional event. Banquet speakers John P. Colletta, PhD, FUGA and Katherine York, archivist for the multimillion-dollar personal collection of ’60s rock impresario Bill Graham of Fillmore fame, will entertain and instruct us.

Theme: The theme of the 2014 Jamboree is Golden Memories: Discovering Your Family History. Our heritage focus will be on European ancestors. Class sessions are scheduled for German, Irish, English / UK, Scotland, Eastern Europe, Italian, Mennonite, Swedish, and Russian, as well as African American and Jewish classes.

Jamboree will be the culmination of a year-long celebration of the Society’s 50th Anniversary, and special activities will commemorate the Decade of the 60s. Dust off your tie dye tees and pillbox hats and take part in our Sunday noon “fashion show.” Winner by popular vote will receive a free registration to the 2015 Jamboree.

Following on the heels of last year’s very successful event, we will again hold Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2014. The conference will be produced by the Southern California Genealogical Society and sponsored jointly by SCGS and the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG). Family History and DNA will be held Thursday, June 5, at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank.

Keynote speaker Dr. Maurice Gleeson is by profession a psychiatrist and pharmaceutical physician. He is also a professional actor and has appeared on the West End stage in London. Maurice is co-administrator of the Ireland mitochondrial DNA project. He has given talks on genetic genealogy at the ‘Back to Our Past’ exhibition in Dublin (2012 & 2013) and also at the National Library of Ireland (Dublin), The National Archives in Kew (London), and at various regional and local meetings. His presentation will be of interest to Irish researchers in general, as well as those who are DNA users: “How DNA will Change the Face of Irish Genealogy.”

Other speakers at Family History and DNA include many of the leaders of the genetic genealogical community: Blaine Bettinger, JD; Judy G. Russell, JD, CG; CeCe Moore; Tim Janzen, MD; Diahan Southard; Alice Fairhurst; Cheri Mello; Katherine Borges; Bonny Cook; and Dr. Kathryn Johnston.

Special pricing for 2014 gives a discount to those who register for both Jamboree and the Family History and DNA conference. In addition, DNA conference registration prices have been reduced to make the information available to a wider audience.”

Letting go of the purse strings….its not easy.

I’m loving the Jamboree App that SCGS launched this year! It is allowing me to let go of the purse strings a little.

This is the second year in a row that my daughter will be accompaning me to the SCGS Jamboree. She loved going last year and is very excited about going this year. Two weeks ago, my baby girl turned 15, where did the time go? For her birthday, I surprised her that not only are we going to Jamboree this year, but we have a hotel room as well! She was very surprised and happy! Well I downloaded the Jamboree App and it not only allows you to send friends request to others but you can also share your planned schedule with certain friends as well.

I had my daughter download the app to her ipad mini and had her pick her classes for the three days. Then we friended each other. After we friended each other, we shared our schedule with each other. I can now see the classes that my daughter selected, which ones we will be attended together, and her back up classes (in case her first ones fill up.) This eases my mind to know where she might be at any given time in the day without being overprotective.

Thank you SCGS Jamboree!! This is a wonderful tool for a mother who is learning, ever so slightly, to let go of the purse strings and allow her baby chickadee to fly!

Heading to Jamboree in Burbank, CA on Friday!

Hello everyone! I hope that the week has been kind to everyone. A few weeks ago, I had a wonderful time at the NGS Annual Family History Conference in Las Vegas, NV. I wasn’t able to blog that much mainly because the hotel I stayed at (like many hotels in Vegas) didn’t offer free in-room internet and it was pricey. Also, the internet at the conference is what allowed me to make my few posts on NGS but it couldn’t handle the number of people there wanting to use it so I got bummped off a lot!

Now that I am heading for SCGC Jamboree in Burbank tomorrow, I am prepared. This time, I added our hotspot service to my cell phone so that when I need internet, I could have access that wouldn’t bumped me off every 20 minuets or cost an arm and a leg! I have tested the hotspot at work (we don’t have wifi here (free or otherwise)) and it worked wonderfully! I’m also glad we added this service because now my daughter gets to “chat” with her dad at night! So its a win-win!
